SCORE

The monthly rate for new mentor requests continues to grow for SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon. Each new volunteer mentor is a critical asset to ensure that our clients receive the timely guidance they need to succeed. Our volunteers can give back to their community by fueling local small businesses that create jobs, contribute to the local economy, and lend a distinct character & personality to a community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place

Turning Life Skills into SCORE Assets

Randy Lauver is a new volunteer mentor with SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon. He brings the skills of 20+ years of sales experience to his role as a mentor. Randy began his career with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Shippensburg University.

“My background in Sales enables me to identify with many small businesses as I have worked for several small businesses. Additionally, I have worked for larger corporations as well, which has given me the ability to bring the larger business Sales Technologies and Processes to small businesses.”

- Randy Lauver, SCORE volunteer mentor

Randy also has experience in Public Relations, and in a world where branding and image of a small business or nonprofit organization are increasingly important, this is an invaluable skill set.

“According to the Public Relations Society of America, ‘Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.’ That’s a pretty broad and somewhat complex definition. In simpler terms, PR is essentially about earning people’s attention and trust and gaining free publicity as a result of that.”

Helping Others Is Essential

Randy learned about the mission of SCORE online and, after further investigation, realized that SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon was a business organization with volunteer opportunities that suited the skills he had to offer. Randy believes that being successful in business can create a transition to success in other aspects of life. Above all, he believes that giving back is essential.

Randy did not wait until retirement to begin his journey as a certified SCORE mentor. He is still working and finds that time management is key to being an active Chapter member. Like so many others that preceded him, Randy was inspired to become a SCORE mentor from a deep sense of purpose.

“Giving back drew me to volunteer for SCORE. I am in the twilight portion of my career, and I would like to help mentor the next generation. Giving back and service to one’s community is part of why we are here. I believe that passing along experience is crucial to the next generation so they can benefit from us.”
