SCORE mentor Ramon Estevez

SCORE believes in the importance, power, and value of diversity - the diversity of people and the diversity of thought. Inclusion is critical if efforts to achieve diversity are to be successful. We are committed to achieving diversity and inclusion among our volunteers, staff, and board to serve our diverse client base better.

Becoming Proactive with Mentor Recruitment

Recently our SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon volunteers have been actively recruiting potential candidates for new mentors to reach a broad spectrum of the population that reflects the community that we serve. They have also been tapping into an obvious resource among their past and present clients. Many of these individuals present as ideal mentor candidates with unique skill sets and talents to serve the small business community.

SCORE mentor Denise Fessler aimed at both of these goals when she reached out to former client Ramon Estevez in May of last year. Not only would Ramon add much-needed financial skills during an unprecedented economic crisis, but he would also bring the bonus of his bilingual talents to the Chapter. A combination of Ramon’s deep respect for Denise, along with his awareness that his unique skills were sorely needed during the pandemic, prompted him to agree to become a SCORE mentor although he was just beginning a new and challenging position in finance.

The Spirit of Giving Back

The decision to commit to becoming a SCORE volunteer mentor was perhaps made more straightforward by Ramon’s philosophy about the values and benefits of giving back to the community where he lives and works.

“It has been my privilege since I moved to the U.S. in the mid-2000s to volunteer in many capacities. First in my Church, where I have been involved in various Councils since 2008, then as a soccer coach, and more recently, as a board member of a Hispanic organization based in Lancaster, PA, and now as a SCORE mentor since 2020. When I say a privilege, I sincerely mean it since I have found that more comes this way as a result of being part of organizations surrounded by capable people who are willing to freely share their time and expertise in a humble way to live the mission of those organizations and to serve the community. It’s been enriching, and it has taught me several personal and professional value lessons that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be exposed to otherwise.”

SCORE Mentors Serve while Still Active in Their Careers

Many of our recent SCORE volunteer mentors are coming to the Chapter while still active in busy and engaging full-time careers. Our clients are reaping the benefits of this new influx of time and talent. Ramon Estevez serves as the Director of Business Underwriting for High Impact Financial Analysis, one of the leaders in commercial lending underwriting for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI), Foundations, EDCs, and Municipalities. Ramon can help start-ups set up a business, assist existing companies in improving financial performance, and supporting distressed companies in locating alternatives to stabilize their operations and prepare them to negotiate terms with creditors.

“As a banker and impact lending consultant with over 20 years of experience in all facets of commercial lending cycle from lending, credit, loan closing, and problem loan management. I have assisted hundreds of businesses with their financial business needs to apply for loans from a wide variety of industries, guiding them through the closing process and assisting borrowers should they struggle with making payments on the loans.”
