SCORE mentor Naeem Malik

According to the INDEPENDENT SECTOR in 2018, 63 million Americans served about 8 billion hours to support communities. There is no doubt that volunteering benefits the community. Still, there is also significant evidence that it holds unique benefits for retired individuals seeking to connect to a passionate cause. While retirees make up only 31% of the adult U.S. population aged 25 and over, retirees account for 45% of total hours volunteered, according to a Merrill Lynch study.

Enrich Retirement Through Volunteering

The success of the mission of SCORE Chapter 16 to foster vibrant small business communities through mentoring and education would not be possible without the benefit of our dedicated volunteers. These individuals donate their time and talents to provide service and guidance to our clients. The majority of SCORE Lancaster - Lebanon volunteer mentors are retired business professionals who draw on a lifetime of experience to pass on in their mentoring sessions.

Meet new SCORE mentor Naeem Malik, recently retired from Armstrong World Industries after forty years. Naeem joined Armstrong after graduating from West Chester University in 1979 with a degree in Business Administration. He spent his career there in sales and sales management, with stints in business development, marketing, and sales operations along the way. Naeem feels that these years have provided him with unique experiences that will benefit the SCORE clients he is called upon to mentor.

"In my roles at Armstrong, I worked with a lot of family-owned businesses in retail and wholesale building materials. That experience is helpful, along with my business development and marketing experience in assessing business opportunities."

Continuing the Armstrong Tradition of Community Contribution

Naeem Malik joins many of his former Armstrong colleagues as he takes his place as a certified mentor at SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon. The ranks of the retired professionals from Armstrong World Industries have been a steady source of committed volunteers for Chapter 16. Over the years, this Armstrong tradition of serving the community after retirement has produced approximately forty SCORE mentors. Among them, five have risen to take on the roles and responsibilities of Chapter Chair.

"Armstrong and many other local companies prioritize community involvement and contribution.  Whether the United Way or numerous other nonprofits, employees are encouraged to "give back" to their communities – to contribute time and talent, not just money. Hundreds of employees engage with youth sports, volunteer fire and ambulance organizations, historic preservation efforts, and others. Armstrong' retirees, nurtured in that tradition, continue to contribute to their communities through organizations such as SCORE."
    -  Tom Burgum, retired Armstrong executive and certified SCORE mentor

In this way, the Armstrong tradition of community contribution is continuing each day through former employees' vibrant efforts.

Translating Life-Work into a New Chapter of Life

SCORE mentor Naeem Malik is looking forward to making his contributions to the small business community's success through his work with SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon.

"I enjoyed helping my colleagues and customers succeed in my work life, and I want to continue doing that. Volunteering to apply my skills and experience by helping a local entrepreneur become more successful at their business continues to provide me with the satisfaction I enjoyed in my professional career. Although my experience with SCORE has been limited in my first year due to COVID-19, I have had some gratifying experiences with a couple of clients, helping them think through some of their challenges around how to add resources for growth or shift their focus on opportunities that provide a better return on their investment."
