SCORE

Meet new SCORE mentor Karen Shenk. Karen has joined the ranks of new young volunteer SCORE mentors. They are finding both satisfaction and empowerment in talking on mentoring roles while still active in their professional careers. Mentoring small business owners is an investment in the future of your community and a unique way to learn new perspectives with each new client.

Karen graduated from Trinity International University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, with an emphasis in Accounting and a minor in Philosophy. She began her career at Weiss & Company, LLP out of Chicago starting in  2004. Karen relocated to Lancaster to accept a position at Trout, Ebersole & Groff, LLP, in 2012 and was admitted as a partner in the firm in 2016. She currently serves on the firm's Manufacturing, Construction, Not-for-Profit, and Forensics Practice Groups. Karen is also a member of the firm's Business Development, Quality Control Committees, and chairs the firm's Attest Services Committee and Client Services Committee.

To paraphrase a popular quote, “If you want something done, you should get a busy woman to do it for you!” this would aptly describe Karen Shenk. In addition to serving as a volunteer mentor for SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon, she additionally serves as Board Member & Treasurer at Power Packs Project and has the same responsibilities at Blossom Hill Mennonite Church. Karen is also a proud graduate of Leadership Lancaster Core Class of 2014 – Best Class Ever!

SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is extremely grateful that a young professional with Karen’s skills and expertise would lend her time and talents to our clients. Karen brings the knowledge and skill of a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Fraud Examiner, and a Certified Valuation Analyst to the table when she offers support to our small business and nonprofit clients.

“I love working with entrepreneurs at every level.  I also know that our community benefits from the success of small businesses.  Everyone is great at something, and I love surrounding myself with people who are great in areas where I need growth.  I can help support the real activities of the small business and non-profits I mentor by providing guidance in areas they need support.”

In addition to serving as a volunteer mentor to SCORE clients, Karen recently presented at a SCORE Chamber Lunch & Learn Series on “It’s A Wrap – Planning for Tax Season.” The presentation prepared the small business owners that attended with ways to organize their tax information for their accountants and ways to present the materials that are the most efficient.

“Every interaction I’ve had with fellow SCORE mentors or with clients has been rewarding.  I enjoy drawing on my professional experience to help SCORE clients.  As much as I can help SCORE clients, I feel that in return, not only do I get the satisfaction of helping them, but I also can learn and understand what issues are most important to them.  The knowledge of what matters to them helps me in future mentor relationships, and also helps me professionally, by giving me even more experience to draw on.”
